Corona Fire Sparks Blaze in Yorba Linda

Yorba Linda is the latest area to get trapped in the massive expanse of California wildfires. The Strong Santa Anna winds are sure to keep these fires going for a while.

The flames erupted in a stretch of Santa Ana River bottom near the 91 Freeway and quickly grew to at least 800 acres. Fierce, erratic winds pushed it into an adjoining subdivision, where 5,000-square-foot homes are the norm.

A dozen buildings burned in the Riverside County town of Corona. Two city firefighters were slightly injured when the fast-moving flames swept over their fire engine, said Christy Romero, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Fire Authority.

Hot embers and choking smoke filled the air.

The fire moved west into the neighboring Orange County communities of Yorba Linda and Anaheim Hills.

On television, homes were seen aflame on twisting roads in the hilly canyon country. Some were the only ones burning on otherwise untouched streets of big, expensive homes and manicured lawns. Elsewhere, flames licked up tinder-dry ridges behind the sprawling subdivisions that have sprung up in the last decade in eastern Orange County.
